Why do you pay tolls for the Tauern Tunnel & Tauern Motorway?

On motorways, you pay the toll in Austria by buying a vignette in advance. However, if you want to cross special toll sections such as the Tauern Tunnel, an additional fee is due. You also have to pay the Brenner toll separately if you want to drive towards Italy.

Since the construction of a tunnel is very cost-intensive, the passage is charged extra. You don't need a vignette for the section of the Tauern motorway for which the route toll is charged. For several years now, no toll has been due for the Pfänder Tunnel.

Important: The Lueg Bridge will be renovated by 2030. Accordingly, there will be severe disruptions in some cases due to the Brenner construction site.

Where does the Tauern motorway run?

The Tauern motorway runs from Salzburg to Villach and is a very important north-south connection in Austria. For example, if you want to drive to Slovenia, you should use the Tauern motorway.

Between Flachau and St. Michael or Zedernhaus, the Tauern tunnel is crossed and between St. Michael and Rennweg you drive through the Katschberg tunnel. The Tauern motorway toll includes both tunnels.

It is also possible to buy the toll only for individual sections – but this is only possible if you have not already paid the toll online in advance. If you want to leave the Tauern motorway early, you only pay for the individual section. There are the following sections:

  • St. Michael to Rennweg / Rennweg to St. Michael
  • Flachau to Zederhaus / Zederhaus to Flachau
  • Flachau to St. Michael / St. Michael to Flachau

How much does the Tauern Tunnel toll cost?

It is not only in Austria that there is a special toll – with the toll in Denmark, for example, you pay a fee for crossing bridges. However, the costs for the Tauern Tunnel and the Katschberg Tunnel are significantly lower than a bridge toll in Denmark – but they will increase in 2026. The following costs will be incurred from 1 January 2026 for the Tauern Motorway and Katschberg Tunnel:

Vehicle Number of trips Costs
Car/motorcycle/sidecar 1 ride (round trip) 15 €
2 trips (round trip) 30 €

Is it possible to bypass the Tauern Tunnel?

Yes, you can bypass the Tauern Tunnel, but only quite extensively. To do this, it is necessary to drive over the Obertauern pass road. If you are coming from the north, take the Radstadt exit and follow the B99 over the Katschberg. Actually, the route is only 15 kilometers longer, but you drive over the mountains. This can lead to unforeseen problems with snow (you may need winter tires or snow chains) and the altitude difference will definitely take you longer.

You save the toll for the Tauern Tunnel, but you don't save fuel.
